I was surprised to see that Assembly Bill A3556C has not made it further in the legislative process. Assembly Bill A3556C prohibits the sale of certain products that contain regulated perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances; and provides penalties for violations. PFAS are hazardous to humans, they have at least one carbon-fluorine bond, which makes them resistant to degradation.
As an environmental studies student at Skidmore College and as a Brooklyn resident, I strongly encourage State Senator Andrew Gounardes to co-sponsor Assembly Bill A3556C and work towards its swift passage. Supporting this legislation is a vital step in addressing the widespread distribution of these hazardous “forever” chemicals. By setting regulations now, we can prevent further environmental damage and protect community health from the harmful effects of PFAS.
The long-lasting nature of these toxic PFAS compounds– found in Teflon frying pans, menstrual products and cosmetics– means they can accumulate in the environment, especially our soils and drinking water, leading to contamination of drinking water supplies and food sources. This has raised alarm among scientists and health experts regarding their potential health effects, including links to reduced vaccine responses in children, liver and kidney damage, increased cholesterol and even cancer.
The Environmental Protection Agency highlights additional risks, including fertility complications, developmental delays in children and heightened cancer risk. Proper management of PFAS compounds and consumer products is needed to better protect public health and the environment.
States like Minnesota, Washington and Maine have already enacted laws limiting PFAS use, setting a precedent that New York must follow. I encourage everyone, especially those outside these states, to write to their local representatives and advocate for similar measures in your hometowns. I believe that raising awareness about this issue is essential, and I hope that more individuals will join me in contacting Senator Gounardes to advocate for stronger regulations. Together, we can push for meaningful change before it’s too late.
