The Afropunk Festival is an annual music and cultural event that celebrates Black creativity and alternative culture.
In short, it's where the best of Black creativity, beauty and excellence come to shine!
This year's festival, which took place at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park, August 23 - August 24, was hosted by BRIC's "Celebrate Brooklyn."
Originating in Brooklyn, New York, in 2005, the festival was inspired by the documentary Afro-Punk, which explored the Black experience in the punk music scene.
Afropunk has since evolved into a global movement, hosting events in cities like Paris, London, and Johannesburg.
Last year's festival, themed "Circus of Soul," kicked off Afropunk's upcoming 20th year anniversary.
The theme of this year's fest was "Blacktopia," highlighting the future visions of Black culture.
The festival features a diverse lineup of musical acts, spanning genres from punk and rock to hip-hop and R&B, alongside art, fashion, and food that reflect the richness of the African diaspora.
Some of this year's acts included singer and songwriter, Erykah Badu, who was the featured act both days. Also performing were Larissa Luz on Friday and Rebelmatic, HUE, Durand Bernarr and a slew of other emerging acts on Saturday.
Afropunk is also known for its commitment to social justice, embracing themes of empowerment, inclusion, and activism.
