New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal for the Interborough Rail Line moved closer Monday night toward becoming a reality, reported PIX11 News.

The MTA outlined its proposal for constructing a light rail line on the current freight rail lines, in addition to resurrecting a commuter line that transported travelers until 1924.

“I like the idea a lot,” Georgette Cutrone, a longtime waitress at the Glendale Diner, told PIX11 News.

It’s been increasingly difficult for people in the community to travel back and forth from Brooklyn and Queens, she said. She and several other commuters support the petition for a 19-stop IBX rail line connecting Bay Ridge to Jackson Heights.

“The economic and employment opportunities we can create on either side of the Queens-Brooklyn border are endless as we establish the first direct connections between communities like Elmhurst, Middle Village, East Flatbush and Sunset Park,”said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.

However, not all residents approve.

“I just hope it’s not going to negatively affect air quality with a new train station,” Dorina Belu, a Glendale resident, told PIX11 News.

The IBX rail still has to pass the environmental review, a two-year process which has yet to begin, and petition for principal funding and bidding.
