Brooklyn rang in the new year with a joyous occasion when a Crown Heights couple welcomed twin girls shortly after midnight on Jan. 1, 2025 at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, marking the borough's first babies of the new year.

The first baby girl was born at 12:01am, weighing six pounds, 13.9 oz, and the second baby girl was born at 12:02am, weighing five pounds, 15.4 oz. A few hours later, Maimonides Health celebrated the arrival of baby girl Malia Carrasquillo, who made her debut at 3:54am, weighing a healthy eight pounds, nine ounces, and measuring 21 inches long.

Born to proud Crown Heights parents Marie Aserat and Mark Carrasquillo, Malia's arrival was both a surprise and a milestone for the family.

“Malia is full of surprises. Her original due date was Christmas. We have been joking that she only gets one present. I think she heard us,” shared mom Marie Aserat with a laugh. “To be an entire week late and then the first baby born on another holiday, marking a whole new year - you make plans and God laughs.”

Both mother and baby are doing well, thanks to the expert care provided by Dr. June Ng and the dedicated labor and delivery team at Maimonides Medical Center.

"Welcoming Brooklyn's first baby of the year is always a special moment for our entire team," said Dr. Janet Stein, director of obstetrics at Maimonides Health. "It's a wonderful way to begin 2025, and we're honored to be part of this family's celebration."

Maimonides Health, Brooklyn's largest healthcare provider, delivers approximately 6,000 babies annually, solidifying its reputation as one of the busiest and most trusted labor and delivery programs in New York State. The hospital is known for its cutting-edge facilities and expertise in both routine and high-risk deliveries.

In celebration of Malia’s arrival, the hospital presented the family with a special New Year’s gift basket filled with essentials and keepsakes, including diapers, toys, onesies, burp cloths, and even a commemorative wine glass to toast the occasion.

As Brooklyn steps into 2025, Malia Carrasquillo’s birth serves as a symbol of new beginnings and joy for the borough.
