A man who picked up the phone at Gottlieb’s this morning, who said he worked with the family, said the death “was a real tragedy, we weren’t ready for that at all… he was a great guy, he came in every day.”

He said Gottlieb’s will be closed for seven days as the family sits shiva, a week-long mourning period in Judaism.

Gottlieb’s is a staple in Williamsburg’s Hasidic community, and has been serving chicken liver, pastrami sandwiches, goulash and other Kosher dishes to locals and tourists since 1962.
