Brooklyn Teen Arrested in Panama For Alleged Murder

The fugitive was identified on video surveillance footage.

A Brooklyn teenager who fled after allegedly killing a 15-year-old faces a 25-year prison sentence following his arrest in Panama last week.

Leopoldo Nash Montoya fled following his alleged murder of Faridun Mavlonov last summer, according to a press release from Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

Mavlonov was fatally shot on July 17 between 20th Avenue and 62nd Street in Bensonhurst. Montoya targeted the 16-year-old that he and his alleged accomplices assaulted on July 12.

The DA's office said the authorities arrested the fugitive on June 5 and brought him back to Brooklyn on Thursday.

Gonzalez said he hoped the arrest would give Mavlonov's loved ones closure.

"This defendant was returned to Brooklyn from Panama and will now be brought to justice for allegedly killing Faridun Mavlonov, who was just 15 years old and had his whole life ahead of him. Hopefully, this prosecution will bring some solace to Faridun’s heartbroken family and friends," he said.

The DA's office said Montoya appeared before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Craig S. Walker on an indictment facing charges of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree attempted gang assault and third-degree assault.

The authorities remanded the teen in custody until his next court appearance on Wednesday.
