Over 1,000 people took part in the Sunset Park Health Empowerment Celebration this past Saturday, August 19 in Brooklyn. The annual event hosted by RaisingHealth Partners, along with numerous other community organizations, aims to give New York City immigrants access to free wellness activities and resources.
“At RaisingHealth we look beyond the delivery of healthcare, but think about the everyday social determinants of health for our community," RaisingHealth’s President and CEO Hewett Chiu said. "The goal of the Health Empowerment Celebration was to break barriers by providing our community with access to important resources for thriving in the community and living a healthy life.”
Attendees were able to learn more about the healthcare options and multilingual services available in their community. Organizations including RaisingHealth, Mixteca, Center for Family Life and Health Education on Wheels offered information on local events and healthcare programming.
Community members were also able to receive hypertension, liver and fat content screenings from Brooklyn Free Clinic and Northwell. Along with more holistic health activities that included yoga, breathing and stretching exercises, as well as self-defense techniques from local instructors.
