What are your plans for July 30, better known as National Cheesecake Day?
It's New York's favorite dessert, so I hope you've given it some thought. If you haven't yet, don't panic — you have through Monday to get to Junior's in Downtown Brooklyn and celebrate for $5 a slice.
That's really all you need to do.
To honor National Cheesecake Day, Junior's is also resurrecting its strawberry shortcake cheesecake. The cheesecake-shortcake hybrid is an old favorite and one of the slices on offer for five bucks this weekend.
"It's a special cheesecake at a special price," said Fort Greene resident Hayes Taylor, who's been the general manager of Junior's for four years and a customer for 40.
Downtown Brooklyn resident Taina Negron has worked as a server at Junior's for ten years. She's a veteran of many cheesecake promotions.
"One year, we were selling slices for our anniversary for 69 cents," Negron said. "We had a line down the block."
Junior's Restaurant first opened at the corner of Flatbush and Dekalb in 1950. It now has four locations throughout the city and a bakery outlet in New Jersey.
The iconic Brooklyn eatery offers over 15 varieties of cheesecake, and is one of New York's best-known cheesecake purveyors. Junior's website stops just short of calling its cheesecake the best in the city (though it's strongly implied). In addition to five-dollar slices, they're offering steep discounts on whole cheesecakes this weekend.
Once again, National Cheesecake Day is upon us. How are you celebrating?
