From kids playing on the sidewalk to fire hydrant explosions, the six participating artists in They’re There, a photography exhibit in Downtown Brooklyn, capture a myriad of perspectives on life in Brooklyn.
The exhibit is on view at the Corner Gallery, located within the Brooklyn Made Store in the City Point mall.
“There are so many stories in Brooklyn. This store is meant to tell those stories for you to come in and learn about them, to be a part of those stories," said Gabrielle Napolitano, director of communications and partnerships at Brooklyn Made, which is run by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to showcase the work of craftspeople, artists and makers from across the borough.
There are six Brooklyn-based street photographers displaying their work, including Reuben Radding, Boris Apple, Coco McPherson, Syndi Pilar, Cash Exum and Stas Ginzburg.
“A lot of photojournalists, they’re already getting paid to be out there in the streets, and these street photographers are not getting paid to be out there in the streets,” said Stephanie Keith, the exhibit's curator. “I was trying to find a new venue and outlet for their work.”
With this exhibit, Keith, who is a photojournalist herself, hopes to highlight the talent of these artists and give patrons a chance to invest in what she describes as “a hot penny stock.”
For example, she said of Boris Apple, one of the black-and-white photographers in the gallery: “I think Boris is going to be big one of these days. People should come and buy Boris’s photos because I think in years from now they’re going to be worth a lot more than they are right now.”
They’re There is on view until August 31.
