The Brooklyn Hospital Center in Fort Greene is beginning an 18 month—long renovation of its emergency department.
Hospital officials, joined by Assemblymember Walter T. Mosley and community partners, celebrated the groundbreaking of the $25 million project on Wednesday, which will "revolutionize the hospital's response to traumatic injury and illness."
"We already serve more than 70,000 patients each year in our emergency department," said TBHC President and CEO Gary Terrinoni. "This renovation will result in a state-of-the-art facility within life-saving minutes of our neighbors' homes."
The emergency department will be expanded to accommodate the current volume and projected visits in the near future, officials said. A modernized rapid assessment treatment area will accelerate patient flow to treatment and support services. Along with a new bright, airy lobby and waiting area, the new emergency department will feature new triage, exam and treatment rooms, radiology and CT scan rooms, as well as a satellite pharmacy.
Assemblymember Mosley emphasized how vital the hospital is for the local community.
"The Brooklyn Hospital Center is my hospital, and I'm proud of that," said Mosley. "I want to commend President/CEO Gary Terrinoni and the entire staff on the groundbreaking of their multi-million dollar state-of-the-art emergency department. The renovation of your new department is only matched by the level of expertise and experience of your physicians, nurses and entire medical team, support staff and administrators offer to the community."
The renovation is in part funded through a grant from the New York State Health Department.
"This grant enables TBHC to continue our historic mission of providing the community with the best quality emergency services available as we move forward with keeping Brooklyn healthy," Terrinoni said.
