BRIC will showcase Unbossed & Unbowed, a one-woman show chronicling the life of Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman to run for the U.S. presidency on Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21.
Written and performed by Ingrid Griffith, the production highlights Chisholm’s groundbreaking journey from her upbringing in Barbados to her historic presidential campaign in 1972. The show draws its title from Chisholm’s campaign slogan and memoir, encapsulating her enduring spirit of defiance and resilience, according to a press release.
Griffith has earned acclaim for her previous work, including Demerara Gold, which toured internationally. She is also the recipient of the 2023 Guyana Cultural Association Award and the Danny Glover Power of Dream Award. Her latest work, Unbossed & Unbowed, won the 2023 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Production about Social Justice.
“I wanted to honor Chisholm’s legacy and her fearless pursuit of justice,” said Griffith. “Her story resonates today, especially as we witness historic political milestones with Kamala Harris.”
The youth screening is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20, at 12:30pm, with general audience performances on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2:00pm and 7:00pm.
