The New York Transit Museum will celebrate the 120th birthday of the New York City Subway with a Party on Wheels on Sunday, May 5.
Family-friendly events include historic trains rides, one-of-a-kind family photos in the conductor’s cab of a vintage train car, and sing Happy Birthday to the subway while enjoying bagels and birthday cake, according to a news release.
“We are delighted to throw open our doors once again for our first in-person family fundraiser since 2019,” said Museum Director Concetta Bencivenga. “This year’s Party on Wheels is a special opportunity to celebrate 120 years of the subway system that keeps New York moving, take a ride back in time on our vintage fleet, and enjoy a morning of family fun – all while supporting a beloved community organization that has played a significant role in the lives of families for the past 48 years.”
Party on Wheels guests can go on a museum-wide scavenger hunt, enjoy storytime, do a transit-themed crossword or coloring page, make a subway-style mosaic, or even get their face painted with their favorite line.
Families who complete the scavenger hunt will earn a temporary transit tattoo and party goers can enter a giveaway to win a Little Kid, Big City! New York Adventure Book. Breakfast, including bagels, will be available throughout the event and the party will conclude with birthday cake for all.
A selection of the historic subway cars on view at the Museum will actually move – making short shuttle trips from the Museum platform to Hoyt-Schermerhorn station and back.
Proceeds from the event support the museum’s programs for kids and families, including the Access Programs for kids with disabilities.
