Art gallery Higher Pictures Generation has opened an exhibition space in DUMBO with a focus on artists' first shows, both contemporary and historical.
The photography-focused gallery has opened its street-level, jewel-box location adjacent to the entrance of Brooklyn Bridge Park as a new iteration of Higher Pictures, Kim Bourus' former gallery on the Upper East Side.
Higher Pictures presented a range of artists including photographic experimentalist Jessica Eaton and Brooklyn-based artist Nona Faustine. With the new gallery, Bourus is partnering with art dealer Janice Guy and curator Marina Chao.
Guy said opening the gallery was pursuant to the team's enduring commitment to art and the community. "It's been a few years since the closure, after 19 years, of my previous gallery Murray Guy," she said. "How could I resist upgrading Higher Pictures with Generation. After all this is our life -- artists, curators, writers and collectors."
Chao added people would travel anywhere to see good art that was well-curated, and with the new location folks wouldn't have far to go.
The gallery is at 16 Main St in the Stable Building, a property leased by real estate company Two Trees Management.
Two Trees Management Director of Cultural Affairs Kate Gavriel said Higher Pictures Generation's impressive program was a perfect fit for the neighborhood. "The addition of Higher Pictures Generation enhances our vision of sustaining a vibrant and diverse group of arts tenants for DUMBO."
The inaugural exhibition showcased new works by Gina Osterloh, whose art explores selfhood, identity, and the perception of difference. The upcoming exhibition is a group show titled We Wear the Mask, curated by D'Angelo Lovell Williams, opening on Dec. 19 and running through February 2021.
The gallery is open by appointment on Tuesdays and to the public Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Higher Pictures Generation will offer contactless entry.
