The world-famous Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster reopened Saturday, Sept. 7, following a closure for maintenance, according to Luna Park officials.

The Cyclone, a historic wooden coaster that has thrilled visitors since 1927, began welcoming riders again at 11:00am, according to a press release.

Located at the intersection of Surf Avenue and West 10th Street, the Cyclone remains one of the most popular attractions in Coney Island’s Amusement District. It closed on Aug. 22, after the roller coaster stopped mid-ride.

The Zamperla family, owners of Central Amusement International Inc., said they have invested millions into restoring the 97-year-old iconic coaster.

“We are incredibly honored to preserve the legacy of the Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster and offer memorable experiences on this historic coaster, year after year,” said Alessandro Zamperla, president and chief executive officer of Central Amusement International.

The Cyclone, famously known as the "Big Momma" of Coney Island, was designated a New York City Landmark in 1988 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
