A West Midwood man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the violent sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl, as announced by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
Today's sentence by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Jane Tully was made following the defendant, 20-year-old Tony Jonhson, pleading guilty to first-degree criminal sexual act back on June 1, 2022.
District Attorney Gonzalez says that, according to evidence, the incident occurred on Oct. 8, 2019.
On that day, the victim was walking through the Breukelen Houses in Canarsie, on her way to pick up her younger sister from school.
While she was walking, Johnson approached the victim from behind and grabbed her shoulder, demanding that she give him money and her cellphone.
After searching through the victim's bag and finding nothing of value to him, Johnson threatened to stab her, and then forced her into the basement of a nearby building, located at 904 Williams Avenue.
Upon forcing her into the basement, Johnson ordered the victim to remove her pants and underwear, before he proceeded to violently sexually assault her.
Following the assault, Johnson ordered the victim to remain in the basement until he fled the scene, and threatened violence against the victim and her family.
Once Johnson was gone from the area, the victim left the basement, and was discovered by a stranger who called 911. The victim was treated for her injuries at Kings County Hospital, and a sexual assault evidence collection kit was also administered.
Johnson was positively identified from a photo array on Oct. 9, 2019, and was arrested the following day. Johnson's DNA was found to be a subsequent match to the victim's sexual assault kit.
“With today’s sentence, we are holding the defendant accountable for a horrific attack against an innocent child," District Attorney Gonzalez said. "I remain committed to punishing predators who commit such brutal acts of sexual violence against women and seeking justice for victims."
