The Prospect Park Alliance is once again seeking volunteers for their program for a second year, reports Brooklyn Magazine.
"Re:New Prospect Park" is a community initiative aimed at repairing the park's wear and tear of Brooklyn's backyard.
The program launched in 2021 in response to more than a year of pandemic living that brought large waves of park goers. And beginning this month and lasting until October, volunteers can expect to clean and maintain the park. A number of long term improvement projects are set to be completed such as adding new trash cans, installing new picnic tables and fixing old pathways.
“Prospect Park has been so important for all of us these last two years,” stated Prospect Park Alliance Interim President James Snow, in a recent press release. “Our community has supported the park as volunteers, donors and advocates, and enabled us to sustain this essential green oasis.”
Volunteers interested in participating can apply on the Prospect Park Alliance’s website. Last year, they replenished playground’s sandboxes, painted railings and benches, and removed over two tons of invasive plants.
And while some funding comes from Amazon and non-profits such as ACE New York, Re:New still needs support.
Local politicians continue to plead with Mayor Eric Adams to make good on his campaign promise to increase park budgets. However, just as federally funded positions are soon set to expire Adams has cut spending in the city’s green spaces. About 1,800 workers of the Parks Department cleanup positions could be eliminated if funding isn’t secured.
