This weekend, head to Flatbush’s Hillel Plaza to celebrate the start of New York African Restaurant Week with food tastings, vendors, performances and more.
In the ninth iteration of the event, the best of the city’s African diaspora food will be on show through the weekend’s festival and then the following week of special offerings from a number of restaurants.
The festival, which runs from 12:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Flatbush-Nostrand Junction, will showcase food by various chefs and artisans, a marketplace with food, fashion, art, crafts, wellness and beauty vendors, cultural performances, a jam session, Afrobeat sets, poetry and more, spokesperson Akin Akinsanya said.
Then, from October 15-31, restaurants, cafes and bars across the five boroughs will be offering special menus and offerings, giving New Yorkers the chance to try a range of traditional African dishes.
Participating restaurants so far include Brooklyn Suya, Queen of Sheba, Amarachi, Kookies and Cream, Buka Restaurant, Kelewele, La Savane, Brooklyn Tea, Sisters and Family Restaurant, Ponty Bistro, Lenox Sapphire and Accra. The full list of participating restaurants will be released on October 13.
New York African Restaurant Week will also include cooking classes, chef dinners and special events at restaurants.
The week, which kicked off in New York City in 2013, brings together locals, tourists, foodies, culture enthusiasts, social influencers and entrepreneurs, Akinsanya said, adding it was a commitment to community development and social impact.
The week not only gives New Yorkers the chance to try something new, but also stimulates the local economy and supports small businesses, he added.
