The sun shining, it's Friday afternoon... and school is out for the summer!
Although music to smaller ears, the holidays can often be a stressful time for those left to fill in the hours normally spent (if there is a normal anymore) cramming in school work.
But with the City well on its path to reopening, there are a range of activities to across the borough to keep young mind's busy -- far from the summer of 2020.
BK Reader has lined up six trips that can be made into full day excursions and are fun for the whole family -- holidaying or not.
Take a dip in a Cool Pool
Check out one of Brooklyn's four Cool Pools --Bushwick Pool, Commodore Barry Pool, Douglass and DeGraw Pool and Howard Pool -- for a day tropical poolside fun. And of course swimming. The City's Cool Pools feature summer-themed wall art and lounge chairs for sunbathing and relaxing poolside, cabana-style shade structures to help keep you cool, plantings to make the pools greener, and fun and free poolside activities, including games, sports, arts and crafts, and fitness classes.
Brooklyn Children's Museum
Ready to be A-MAZE-D? This Saturday, Brooklyn Children's Museum is opening its newest exhibit - a GIANT 3D maze created from corrugated cardboard boxes that fills our entire 2nd floor exhibit space. Twist, turn and navigate your way through a labyrinth of winding corridors, tunnels and dead ends stretching across 2000 square feet. A painted cityscape provides the backdrop while exploring, and behind every turn a new NYC landmark awaits for you to discover. Click here for tickets.
Head to Luna Park in Coney Island
After a year of closure due to the pandemic, Luna Park is back up-and-running! It kicked off the festivities with its traditional egg cream christening of the Coney Island Cyclone. This year, the park has introduced six new attractions for children, ranging from swings and coasters to racing games. The new rides include Circus Candy, Fire Patrol, Rainbowheel, AeroMax, Grand Prix, and Mini Mouse. In addition to the new rides, its opened its new restaurant on the boardwalk, Salt & Sizzle.
Skating at Prospect Park
Head over to Prospect Park's LeFrak Center for an outdoor roller skating rink that offers plenty of fun for kids, tweens, and adults alike. Skate to a mix of pop hits while taking in views of Prospect Park Lake. Skate rentals are available in children and adult sizes. Check out the event calendar for information on themed roller skating events such as our Roller Disco series. Lakeside also offers roller skating birthday parties, group outings, and private rentals after hours.
Fun for everyone at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Brooklyn Bridge Park has something for everyone these holidays! Starting this weekend, there are star-gazing events, pollination scavenger hunts, dancing, and much more. Plus, there's the regular offering of basketball and handball courts, a fitness center, roller skating, play areas and kayaking, a lovely sandy beach, hibachi-style barbecue, bike paths and expansive playground areas featuring sand, water, swings, and climbing, and more.
Mini golf at Industry City
Head over to Industry City for some mini golf, and stay for the fire pit, petanque and rock and roll playhouse. The mini golf promises family fun for all skill levels, with gear available from Burger Joint. Mini golf equipment is free for all Industry City visitors. A $5 deposit is required when picking up the equipment from Burger Joint. Parent can also take turns slipping off to see the new Home Is Inside You art installation.
