Next Thursday, June 17, will be celebrated as One Love Little Caribbean Day by local Brooklyn leaders and the Caribbean community in honor of Caribbean Heritage Month.
New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Assemblywoman Diana Richardson and members of the business community from Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Garden and East Flatbush will come together on Thursday for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the celebratory day.
“As a Caribbean American, the son of immigrants, as a New Yorker, it gives me great pride to see Little Caribbean celebrated and Caribbean heritage and culture uplifted,” Williams said of the day organized by Caribbean advocacy and cultural organization CaribBeing.
The ribbon cutting will be held at the intersection of Washington and Flatbush Avenues and will give the community the chance to “come together to honor the rich legacy and diverse cultural contributions of people of the Caribbean Latin-X Diaspora,” Shelley Worrell, founder and CEO of CaribBeing, said.
Flatbush’s Little Caribbean, founded in 2017, is home to the largest and most diverse Caribbean-American LatinX community outside of the West Indies and makes up 20% of New York City’s overall population, Worrell said.
“Little Caribbean is home to a rich and diverse culturally mix group of people, restaurants, and small businesses that come together to share social and cultural histories that adds to the fabric and rich legacy that is Brooklyn.”
Assemblywoman Richardson added: “As an advocate for the Caribbean American community, it warms my heart to be part of a celebration honoring Brooklyn’s proud Caribbean heritage.”
The ceremony is being held in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance, and with support from Yelp, Lyft, Doordash, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, NYC Small Business Services and NYC & Company. It will take place at 10:30am.
