This Thursday, candidates vying to represent Brooklyn's 35th District will have the chance answer voters' questions and share their plans if elected to City Council in a live forum.
Crystal Hudson, Curtis Harris, Deidre Levy, Hector Robertson, Michael Hollingsworth, Regina Kinsey, Renee Collymore and Sharon Wedderburn will take part in the forum held by Brooklyn Movement Center and hosted by Center for Law and Social Justice Interim Executive Director Lurie Daniel Favors, Esq.
The forum will be held at Ebbet's Felds, 1720 Bedford Ave., and streamed live via Zoom.
The 35th Council District includes the communities of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights and parts of Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant.
So far, former staffer for current Councilmember Laurie Cumbo and founder of Greater Prospect Heights Mutual Aid Crystal Hudson leads the race in private fundraising, having gathered $113,662.
Crown Heights Tenants Union organizer Michael Hollingsworth is coming in second, having raised $76,788 in private funds. And district leader, Brooklyn Hospital advisory board member, Council of the 88th Precinct advisory board member, Putnam Avenue Community Service Inc. CEO and instructor at Medgar Evers College Renee Collymore is coming in third with $24,032.
In a statement, Brooklyn Movement Center said in the recent past, Black voters across the country had been targeted as crucial, election deciding constituencies. Campaigns with massive teams and budgets in the millions strategize how they will secure the "Black Vote" to get their seat.
"Too often, we see that attention to Black voters and the needs of Black people vanish once an election is won. Through the Black Brooklyn Voter Project, we want to change that dynamic starting in Central Brooklyn," the organization said.
