Judge Overturns Brooklyn Man’s 1997 Murder Conviction Due to Prosecutors’ Undisclosed Payments to Witness

A Brooklyn man had his 1997 murder conviction overturned Thursday after a judge ruled that thousands of dollars in secret payments to witnesses in his case violated his right to a fair trial.

Louis "Tony" Charriez, 57, was one of two men who told the Daily News last year that a single drug-addicted witness, Althemease Cort, allegedly fabricated her testimony in their cases in exchange for money from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. Both men have now had their convictions thrown out.
