Ta-Nehisi Coates presents 'We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy,' in conversation with Jeffrey Goldberg
Ta-Nehisi Coates, national correspondent at The Atlantic and author of #1 New York Times bestseller "Between the World and Me," will present his newest book, "We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy," at the Kings Theatre in Flatbush on Wednesday, October 4.
Coates' '"We Were Eight Years in Power" examines the correlation between the unprecedented election of Barack Obama and the backlash that fueled the election of Donald Trump, through his personal journey, beginning as a young writer working in an unemployment office in Harlem and ending in the Oval Office, interviewing the president of the United States.
Coates is an acclaimed journalist, blogger and memoirist who brings personal reflection and historical scholarship to reflect on America's most contested issues. In his work, Coates addresses complex and challenging issues such as racial identity, systemic racial bias and urban policing. He often employs anecdotes about himself or others in the present and inserts them skillfully into historical analysis in order to illustrate how the implications of the past are still experienced by people today.
Coates returns to his once home neighborhood of Flatbush, to discuss his work and perspectives with The Atlantic's editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg at the newly restored historic Kings Theatre.
The conversation is a collaboration of Brooklyn's Greenlight Bookstore with The Atlantic. Tickets go on sale to the general public on August 9, but Greenlight fans have a chance to purchase tickets one day early with promo code GREENLIGHT.
