The Brownsville Neighborhood Health Action Center is now open for business!
On Wednesday, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene celebrated the opening of the Brownsville Health Action Center, located at 259 Bristol Street.
As part of the NYC Department of Health's investment in key neighborhoods, the Center for Health Equity's Neighborhood Health Action Center initiative is revitalizing underutilized Health Department buildings by co-locating health services, community health centers, public hospital clinical services, community-based organizations and service providers.
This effort is intended to better serve community members, act as an engine of improved asset linkages, and identify gaps in coverage and reduce duplication. The new Action Center model uses a holistic approach to primary care, activates spaces for community organizing and planning, and connects residents to neighborhood-based social services — all under one roof.
The Brownsville Neighborhood Health Action Center's launch was celebrated with a "Jump into Summer Block Party," an opportunity for the new center, along Action Center partners-- including Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center, Brooklyn Perinatal Network, Health + Hospitals, and Health First--to engage with the residents in a fun setting and meaningful way around the services and programs the center now offers.
Community based organizations, faith-based organizations, city agencies and local businesses lined the streets of the health center, between Blake and Dumont avenues, with information booths that provided health screenings, information and resources on health and wellness, food demonstrations, CPR training, youth ID cards, chair yoga and fitness classes for expectant mothers, fire safety, community skating, face painting, a live DJ, a raffle giveaway and more.
