A gunman shot a man in the ankle near the Barclays Center on Wednesday afternoon, sending bystanders running and sparking a search for the suspect, reported NBC.
Gunshots were fired shortly after 2:15 pm Wednesday outside the Atlantic Terminal Mall across the street from the Brooklyn arena, police said. Initially, investigators were looking for two suspects, but they now believe it to be a single gunman.
Late into the evening, police were still searching for the suspect who fired multiple shots and left behind a baseball hat and a pair of glasses. The objects will be analyzed for DNA, police said.
Elijah Ingram, the 50-year-old victim, was shot in the ankle while heading to work. The innocent bystander was taken to Methodist Hospital and was in stable condition, police said. No one else was injured in the shooting.
“I’m relieved that Mr. Ingram’s injuries are not life-threatening, “Councilmember Laurie Cumbo said in a statement on Thursday. “I’d also like to thank the NYPD for their immediate response to ensure public safety.”
NYPD officers are currently searching for the alleged gunman, a black male, about 5 foot 8 inches tall. He wore a purple baseball cap, a black T-shirt and blue Adidas-type sweatpants with three stripes down the side.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS(8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA(74782).
