In recent months, community board meetings and neighborhood advocates have taken time to speak on bike lanes, traffic safety and speeding concerns. While their efforts are allowing city planners to better prepare for various situations on the road, reckless drivers remain a big obstacle for locals who live in highly populated areas.
This afternoon, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson announced that a Brownsville man, Marlon Sewell, 39, has been indicted on manslaughter and related charges stemming from a gruesome crash on Fulton Street in Fort Greene that left one woman dead and two other pedestrians seriously injured.
District Attorney Thompson said, "At trial, we will prove that the three victims were just walking on Fulton Street when the defendant, through his reckless actions, drove his car onto the sidewalk striking them all and killing Ms. Nicodemus."
According to the investigators, the crash occurred on December 6, 2015, when the defendant was driving a Chevy and drove onto the sidewalk on Fulton Street, striking three unsuspecting pedestrians: Ida Turner, 75, Gerald Toth, 37, and his partner Victoria Nicodemus, 30 who was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hosptial.
Toth sustained injuries to his hand and ankle while Turner suffered injuries to both of her legs, which required a long term commitment to physical therapy. Investigators explain that the defendant was aware of a leak in his vehicle which caused harmful fumes to seep into the vehicle's main cabin, which added to his inability to maintain control of the car.
