Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with a slew of rat complaints for his Bed-Stuy brownstone, reports The Gothamist. This is the fifth time health inspectors have discovered rats outside Adams’ home since 2018.

On Dec. 4, the mayor previously received two $300 summonses after a visit from a city health department inspector who found an active rat burrow along the property line.

Since December, the mayor has beaten a previous $300 recorded violation, but to no one's surprise, another health inspector paid his property a visit shortly after. Adams is not the only homeowner on his block suffering from a rat infestation.

Knowing this, he has assured hearing officers that steps will be taken to spend over $7,000 on various rat abatement measures. Adams is now due before a hearing officer on Jan. 12, to fight his latest fine, according to city summons.

“I am concerned that, despite previously spending nearly $7,000 on rat mitigation efforts, I received two new summonses on the same day, even though a neutral hearing officer found that I had demonstrated sufficient steps taken… To prevent and control infestation at [my] property,” Adams stated.

Rat control has consistently been at the forefront of Adams' community promises, despite rodent experts viewing his attempts as futile. Just last October, the city pushed trash disposal hours from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and Adams later announced the hiring of a rat czar to oversee the city’s efforts.

The mayor, who has made eradicating New York's surging rat population a key policy goal is equally committed to ridding his own house of vermin.

“I will again challenge these violations and show that rats don’t run this city," Adams said in his statement.
