100 Flatbush Ave. to be City's First All-Electric, Solar Residential Tower

The Brooklyn-based company, Alloy Development, is designing the city’s first electric residential tower powered by 100% renewable energy, reports Habitat Magazine.

Following a recent request for a community solar developer, Alloy has announced its 44-story development project located at the residential tower of 100 Flatbush Ave., on the border of Boerum Hill and Fort Greene.

This tower will be part of the Alloy Block, a mixed-use development that comprises five buildings that will provide residential, office, and retail space, as well as two public schools.

Local green energy non-profit, Solar One, is also working to advise Alloy through its "Here Comes Solar" program, as the construction of 100 Flatbush Ave. recently reached a halfway point. The tower at 100 Flatbush Ave. is expected to be completed by 2024.

"All-electric buildings powered by locally distributed solar projects are an inspiring vision for New York’s energy future, and Alloy is building that future today,” Noah Ginsburg, the director of "Here Comes Solar" at Solar One, said.

“Local clean distributed energy systems are central to New York City’s clean energy transition, and also provide important public benefits like good jobs, lower electric bills and, of course, better air quality. Solar One is proud to support Alloy’s work in creating a model sustainable development for New York City.”

Alloy's call for innovative proposals comes just weeks after the city's Department of Buildings released a drafted version of Local Law 97, which requires building owners to reduce their buildings' carbon emissions to specified levels beginning in 2024 — or face heavy fines.

Alloy remains the first developer to pursue such a large project following the rule issuance.
