New Citi Bike stations are popping up all across Bed-Stuy, reports The Brownstoner.
Over 120 new stations are planned to arrive in Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights and Ocean Hill. In a recent neighborhood survey, it was found that the majority of new stations are filling up gaps in the network east of Lewis Avenue.
This update is a significant help to Bed-Stuy residents who previously had to walk blocks to Broadway and Lewis Avenue for a bike.
The new Bed-Stuy stations include one at Hancock Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, one at Halsey Street and Ralph Avenue and one at Chauncey Street and Howard Avenue. And, there are dozens of stations still set to be installed throughout Bed-Stuy, including one in Saratoga Park.
Back in June, Tomas Garita, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, said the DOT’s goal is to “increase access to bike share in more low-income communities and communities of color.”
Although the expansion will help some Brooklyn cyclists move around the borough, surrounding neighborhoods are still without bike access.
Judging by Citi Bike’s online map, Bed-Stuy is the first neighborhood to install new bike stations, with dozens in Ocean Hill and Crown Heights still to come. But, many residents to the south and east of Crown Heights are left to wonder when Citi Bike will come to their neighborhood.
