FRIDAY

WHAT: Bed-Stuy concept store SEED Brklyn opens with day of events

WHERE: 1217 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY

WHEN: Oct. 21, 7:00am-10:00pm

PRICE: Free

 SEED Brklyn, a multi-retail, lifestyle, speakeasy café and experiential art space will open to the public for the first time on Oct. 21. SEED Brklyn plans to welcome the block with three days of public and private programming and events.

During the day, shoppers can stop by to view the space, sample SEED’s menu offerings while listening to the sounds the hottest DJs. Later in the evening, SEED will debut “SEED THE BLOCKCHAIN,” an art exhibition featuring artists and designers Vince Fraser, Shay the Surrealist, Dante Beals and Ceej Vega.

WHAT: Spooky-fun "Nightfall: Eternal Returns" at the Green-Wood Cemetery

WHERE: Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th St., Brooklyn, NY

WHEN: Oct. 21, 7:00pm-10:00pm

After a two-year hiatus, the crowning event of Green-Wood’s fall season returns! This celebration of life, death, and all that’s in between, stretches across winding paths deep into the darkness of the Cemetery.

Around every corner you’ll encounter performances that are sure to delight and amaze. Join us in this opportunity to once again gather together for music, entertainment and relishing the ambiance of one of New York City’s greatest treasures: Green-Wood. 

Nightfall is presented in partnership with Death of Classical, the Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance, Rooftop Films, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Morbid Anatomy, The Moth and Kings County Brewers Collective.

SATURDAY

WHAT: Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival

WHERE: St. Joseph’s University, 245 Clinton Ave., Brooklyn NY

WHEN: Oct. 22, 1:00pm - 8:00pm

PRICE: $20, or $12 with a student or senior ID

Reel Sisters will celebrate its 25th anniversary retrospective with films like Nappy, a classic Black hair film directed by Lydia Ann Douglas, The Red Pill by Tonya Pinkins and newer works by women of color. The festival, which begins on Saturday and runs all weekend, will also feature a lecture series and panel discussion about the future of Black cinematography.

Founded in 1997 by African Voices magazine and LIU Brooklyn Campus, Reel Sisters is among the first film festivals dedicated to supporting women of color filmmakers. Known for celebrating both veterans and rising stars alike, Reel Sisters has honored everyone from Radio One founder Cathy Hugues to HBO’s Insecure writer and director Issa Rae.

WHAT: Nature Exploration at the Prospect Park Audubon Center

WHERE: Audubon Center, 101 East Dr., Brooklyn, NY

WHEN: Oct. 22, 10:00am-1:00pm

Join Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs on Saturdays and Sundays at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation.

Nature Around Us, 10:00am-12:00pm: Enjoy different seasonal discovery stations and nature-themed activities that will introduce you to the plants, insects and animals that call the park home.

Animal Encounter, 11:00am-12:00pm: Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center's collection.

Family Bird Walk, 12:00pm-1:00pm: Prospect Park is a stopping point for hundreds of bird species each year! Join us as we search for these amazing creatures and other nature around the park. Binoculars and bird guides are provided.

WHAT: Van Alen Block Party

WHERE: The intersection of Douglass Street and Bond Street in Brooklyn, NY

WHEN: Oct. 22, 12:00pm–8:00pm

Join us at this year’s Van Alen Block Party — a day of food, music, and dancing in the streets! Free and open to the public, the Van Alen Block Party showcases the creative energy of Gowanus and celebrates the power of bringing people together.

In addition to delicious local treats, there will be performances from an all-women Brazilian drumline, dancing and DJs, a NYCHA drill team and more.

SUNDAY

WHAT: Closing night of the Heights Players' theater production of "Into the Woods"

WHERE: 26 Willow Pl., Brooklyn, NY

An enchanting and whimsical production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s iconic musical "Into the Woods" comes to Brooklyn for a limited engagement at The Heights Players —Brooklyn’s longest-running theater.

The musical is presented as part of the theater’s 67th season. Spells, magic beans, princes, royal balls, and giants abound in this modern musical classic about love, family, and the things we wish for. Directed by Hilary Goldman.

WHAT: Pop-Up Market at the Brooklyn Museum

WHERE: Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Pkwy., Brooklyn, NY

WHEN: Oct. 23, 10:30am-5:30pm

PRICE: Free

Stop by the Brooklyn Museum market to shop one-of-a-kind, handmade items from local artisans. This weekly event features more than 20 vendors offering artwork, jewelry, fashion, home and apothecary goods and more. This event takes place outdoors, but the rain location is on the Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion on the 1st floor of the museum.
