Major Stormwater Resiliency Initiative to Take Place at The Green-Wood Cemetery

DEP said that the cemetery offers great opportunities to help reduce the amount of stormwater runoff that flows into the city's combined sewage system.

A new stormwater resiliency initiative has been announced for The Green-Wood Cemetery.

This new project, which was announced by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation, was created to show how public and private entities in NYC can work together to increase stormwater resilience in the City, according to DEP.

Green-Wood is one of the largest areas of privately-owned land in NYC, with 478 total acres. Because of Green-Wood's grand size, DEP said that the cemetery offers great opportunities to help reduce the amount of stormwater runoff that flows into the city's combined sewage system.

To accomplish this, the project will incorporate a number of different greenwater practices.

These practices include incorporating a pond retrofit with smart sensors, installing bioretention basins along impervious surfaces, subsurface storage and installing a new rainwater harvesting system, according to DEP.

In total, the stormwater resiliency project is estimated to manage around 51 million gallons of stormwater runoff on an annual basis.

This new project has come to fruition because of the DEP's Resilient NYC Partner's Program and EFC's Green Innovation Grant Program.

The project is the first initiative to benefit from the DEP's Resilient NYC Partners program. The $53 million program was created to manage onsite stormwater and green the properties of private property owners residing across New York City.

DEP said it will be providing The Green-Wood Cemetery with a total of $600,000 for the project.

The Green-Wood Cemetery stormwater resiliency initiative is slated to be completed in 2024.
