Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that all subway cars in New York City are going to have cameras installed into them in the future.

This latest measure was made possible through the Urban Area Security Initiative federal grant program, which has awarded $2 million to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority New York City Transit, Gov. Hochul announced.

The funding will allow for the purchase of 5,400 cameras, which will be installed on 2,700 NYC Transit subway cars. This means that each subway train car will be outfitted with two cameras each.

The purpose of this measure is to strengthen security coverage, deter crime and increase passenger confidence in mass transit safety, according to Gov. Hochul.

"My number one priority as Governor is keeping New Yorkers safe," Governor Hochul said. "I am proud that we will be installing cameras on all Subway cars - expanding our security capabilities, deterring crime, and providing our law enforcement with support. As we continue welcoming riders back to the transit system, we will continue doing everything in our power to keep riders safe."

On top of subway cars being outfitted with security cameras, the program will also fund around 3,800 cameras in approximately 130 subway stations, according to a press release from Gov. Hochul.

This latest program, along with the $3.5 million funding from the Subway Action Plan, will combine to fund the installation of 7,310 cameras on 3,655 subway cars in total.

According to the press release from Gov. Hochul, when installation of the cameras begin, an additional 200 train cars will be outfitted with the cameras every month. This will continue until every train car is equipped with camera, which is estimated to occur in 2025 sometime.

In addition, the new R211 subways cars that will be delivered - starting in 2023 - will already have cameras installed into them, according to the press release.
