Voters in New York who are registered as either a Democrat or a Republican will have the chance to pick their party's nominees for governor and lieutenant governor in Tuesday's primary election.

There are three Democrats running for governor

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul
  • New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams
  • Rep. Tom Suozzi

Gov. Kathy Hochul became governor last August after her predecessor, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, resigned amid accusations of sexual harassment. Hochul was Cuomo's lieutenant governor for seven years, previously served a term in Congress, and was the county clerk in Erie County.

Jumaane Williams was elected as New York City Public Advocate in 2019 during a special election, and won a full term in the 2021 election. He previously served as a member of the New York City Council from 2010 until his election as public advocate, and ran for lieutenant governor in 2018.

Rep. Tom Suozzi was first elected to Congress in 2016, and has been re-elected twice. Before serving in Congress, Suozzi had previously served as county executive in Nassau County for two terms. He got his start in politics as mayor of Glen Cove, his hometown in Nassau County.

There are four Republicans running for governor

  • Rep. Lee Zeldin
  • Andrew Giuliani
  • Former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino
  • Businessman Harry Wilson

Rep. Lee Zeldin has been a member of Congress representing part of Long Island since 2015. He was chosen as the party's designated nominee at the Republican State Convention in February. Before serving in Congress, Zeldin was a member of the State Senate. He has a background in the military.

Andrew Giuliani is the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He worked in the White House under former President Donald Trump for four years, serving as a special assistant to the president. Giuliani is still close with Trump, who's been a friend of the family since his father was mayor.

Rob Astorino served two terms as the county executive in Westchester County, where he kept spending and property taxes flat during his tenure. He lost re-election to that job in 2017. Astorino was the Republican nominee against Andrew Cuomo in the 2014 election for governor.

Harry Wilson is a late-comer to the race. He launched his campaign in February. He built a small fortune through corporate consulting, and worked to turn around struggling companies. He's a Harvard graduate. Wilson ran for state comptroller in 2010, but lost that race by a tight margin of four points.

There are three Democrats running for lieutenant governor

  • Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado,
  • Progressive Advocate Ana Maria Archila
  • Former New York City Council Member Diana Reyna

Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado was appointed to his current job in May after Hochul's previous LG was indicted on federal corruption charges. He had previously served as a member of Congress representing part of the Hudson Valley. Delgado is running in support of Hochul's campaign for governor.

Ana Maria Archila has been advocating for progressive causes for the last two decades, and co-founded organizations that support those causes, like Make the Road New York and the Center for Popular Democracy. She's running in support of Williams' campaign for governor.

Diana Reyna served on the New York City Council for 12 years, representing neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. She most recently served as a deputy borough president in Brooklyn under then-Borough President Eric Adams. She's running in support of Suozzi's campaign for governor.

(There is no Republican primary for lieutenant governor. The lone candidate for the party's nomination, Alison Esposito, did not receive any challengers)

Absentee Ballot Information

  • Due to a recent change in the law, New York State voters are no longer permitted to cast a ballot on a voting machine if they have requested to vote by Absentee Ballot.
  • Voters who have requested to vote by Absentee Ballot can still vote in-person using an Affidavit ballot at early voting or election day poll sites.
