The Week in Crime: Spotlight on Flatbush and East Flatbush

Crime is up in Flatbush and East Flatbush, and in Brooklyn as a whole.

There has been a 56% increase in crime reported to Flatbush’s 67th Precinct and a 126% increase reported to East Flatbush’s 70th Precinct during the week February 14 to 20 compared to the same period last year.

Across the two precincts, there have been 82 incidents reported, including reports of robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto to both precincts.

During the same period last year, there were 44 incidents reported across the two precincts, including one rape and nine incidents of robbery.

There have been three murders and seven rapes reported this year in the neighborhood, compared with no murders and nine rapes reported by the same date in 2021.

The most common incidents reported over the week-long period was grand larceny with 21 reports of the crime.

On Feb. 20, the 67th Precinct tweeted a photo of a man wanted for a robbery on the corner of East 88 St. and Avenue A on Feb. 15. The precinct is calling on the public for information.

Meanwhile, also on Feb. 20, the 70th Precinct tweeted a photo of a man who is wanted for grand larceny for allegedly stealing a motorcycle from 605 East 16 St on Jan. 29. Officers are calling on the public for help identifying the man.

Across Brooklyn:

Across the borough, there have been 657 incidents reported between Feb. 14 and Feb. 20, according to NYPD’s CompStat, compared to 401 over the same period in 2021. Over the week, there were six rapes reported in Brooklyn North and two murder and three rapes reported in Brooklyn South. Across the borough, there were 109 robberies and 131 felony assaults reported.

The “eco-yogi slumlords” who evicted tenants from their 1214 Dean St. house at the height of the pandemic will give their $2 million property to the City for affordable housing as a part of a $2.3 million lawsuit settlement. Gennaro Brooks-Church and Loretta Gendville, the owners of the Crown Heights home, reached the settlement with the City after they were charged with violations of the NYC Unlawful Eviction Law, tenant harassment and construction code violations in November 2020.

A Bushwick man has been charged with criminally negligent homicide for allegedly killing Matthew Jensen in a hit and run in Greenpoint last May, according to Brooklyn’s district attorney. 58-year-old Jensen, a teacher at P.S. 110 in Greenpoint, was crossing at the intersection of McGuiness Boulevard and Bayard Street around 1:00am on May 18, 2021 when Tariq Witherspoon allegedly struck him in his Rolls Royce and fled the scene, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said Tuesday.

Officers found a 65-year-old woman dead inside her Brooklyn apartment Wednesday evening, police said Thursday. The woman, Angelina Grimes, was face down and had signs of trauma to her face, police said. EMS pronounced her dead inside the Lenox Road apartment complex. The city’s medical examiner will determine Grimes’ cause of death. Police said an investigation is ongoing.

A duo posing as cops handcuffed, beat up and robbed a man in his own apartment building in East New York, according to police. The 53-year-old man was in his apartment the Cypress Hills Houses on Jan. 8 when two men knocked on the door around 8:15 a.m., claiming they were the police, according to the NYPD. The two men took the 53-year-old from his home in handcuffs and brought him to another part of the building, where they punched him and took $100 cash from his wallet, according to police.
