On Saturday, Jan. 15, a gun buyback event will be held in Flatbush, where anyone can turn in a working handgun or assault rifle in exchange for $200 and an iPad, with no questions asked.

The event will run from 10:00am until 4:00pm at Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church, and is being held by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, the NYPD, Rev. Melvin D. Boone and the GodSquad.

Gonzalez said all transactions will be anonymous, with no questions asked and no ID required, and the bank cards loaded with $200 will be issued after each firearm is received and screened by officers on-site.

He added that guns should be unloaded and packaged in a paper or plastic bag or a box when brought to the event. If transported by car, the guns must be kept in the trunk. Both working and inoperable weapons will be accepted. Those who turn in operable rifles, shotguns and air guns will get $25.

An unlimited numbers of guns can be turned in, but a limit of $600 in bank cards and one iPad has been set per person.

Gonzalez said his office used a multi-pronged strategy to bring down the levels of gun violence in Brooklyn, and the event will provide an opportunity for everyone to turn in a firearm and receive cash and an iPad – “a simple action that can help reduce the number of lethal weapons on our streets.”

Pastor Boone, of the Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church, said community partnerships were what was needed to bring about lasting change improving the safety and quality of life in minority communities.

“At Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church we choose mutual respect and cooperation over confrontation,” he said. “We believe this is the best approach to transform dangerous streets into thriving neighborhoods. It is our pleasure to work with our partners in this effort.”

Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church is located at 3114 Glenwood Rd. in Flatbush.
