Six people were injured and dozens more displaced from their homes when an explosion erupted on a Cypress Hills block around midnight on Tuesday.

FDNY told AMNY the three-alarm fire started in an apartment building located at 58 Vermont St., between Jamaica Avenue and Fulton St.

The explosion caused a huge sound heard blocks away, and fire engulfed the three story building and spread to the exteriors of several buildings next door. Two residents on the top floor of the 58 Vermont St. building escaped and suffered minor injuries, and four other residents were injured in the blast.

AMNY reports that more than 130 firefighters from 33 units responded to the blast, along with officers from the 75th Precinct.

FDNY said that based on a preliminary investigation the fire started as a result of an explosion in the basement of the 58 Vermont St. building. Con Edison said it was investigating whether it was related to a possible gas emergency.

More than 50 residents on the block were displaced from their homes due to the fire threatening the structural stability of other buildings, FDNY said.

The American Red Cross and the City’s Emergency Management Department provided the displaced residents with assistance.
