Brooklyn Has Spoken With New Ice Cream Flavor to Benefit Local Nonprofits

The new flavor was picked by Brooklyn residents and created by ice cream company The Social

A new vanilla malted ice cream with chocolate cheesecake and rainbow cookies will be representing the borough and earning money for Brooklyn’s racial justice nonprofits.

The flavor, dubbed Spread Love… the #BrooklynGives Way, was crowned the winner of a crowdsourcing campaign run by Brooklyn Community Foundation and Prospect Heights dessert spot, The Social, aimed at raising money for the Brooklyn Gives campaign this Giving Tuesday.

The two organzations said they “received brilliant ingredient and flavor combinations and witty names,” from across Brooklyn. The winning flavor, they added, showcased the popular tastes of Brooklyn and used colorful ingredients representing the diversity of the borough.

Jackie Cuscuna, co-owner of The Social, said the ice cream maker’s new Churn for Change fundraiser was designed to support local nonprofits. “Brooklyn Community Foundation’s #BrooklynGives campaign introduces caring and generous Brooklynites to dozens of nonprofits doing important work right in their communities,”  Cuscuna said.

“These are nonprofits many have never heard of. We are all about supporting our neighbors, and we’re thrilled that the new flavor, Spread Love… the #BrooklynGives Way, makes doing so just a little sweeter.”

Brooklyn Community Foundation’s #BrooklynGives campaign gives the borough’s small, grassroots, community-led racial justice organizations a fundraising platform.

Marcella Tillett, Brooklyn Community Foundation vice president of programs and partnership, said, because all proceeds from the purchase of the new flavor went towards the Brooklyn Gives campaign through December, “there are plenty of opportunities for Brooklynites to indulge while doing good for their neighbors.”

The winning entries that influenced the name and flavor will receive two free pints of the new flavor ice cream, a The Social T-shirt, a #BrooklynGives gift card to donate to the nonprofits of their choice at BrooklynGives.org and bragging rights.
