What is this new COVID variant in South Africa?
South African scientists have identified a new version of the coronavirus that they say is behind a recent spike in COVID-19 infections in Gauteng, the countryâs most populous province. Itâs unclear where the new variant actually arose, but it was first detected by scientists in South Africa and has also been seen in travelers to Belgium, Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel.
COVID hospitalizations on the rise in New York
As we reach the holiday season, New York continues to see an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, according to state data released Saturday, Nov. 21. Nearly 6,100 people per day are testing positive for COVID-19. Thatâs up 22% from roughly 5,000 for the seven days through Nov. 11. Itâs also the highest seven-day average since mid-April.
