The U.S. Department of Transportation will send $17 million to New York City to nudge forward a pair of transit projects in low-income neighborhoods, federal officials announced Tuesday.
The funds include $2 million to pay for a study on the negative impacts of the construction of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, including a look into potential improvements to pedestrian and cycling connections near the highway.
âTransit projects like these help keep New Yorkers moving and keep our economy going strong,â said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) . âI personally advocated with Secretary (Pete) Buttigieg to fund the proposed community-based study to determine the best solutions and redesign for the Cross-Bronx Expressway.â
The other $15 million will go to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to help pay for seven new elevators at the Broadway Junction subway complex in East New York that serves the A, C, L, J and Z lines. The station served more than 100,000 people per weekday before the pandemic â" but remains inaccessible to riders in wheelchairs.
