The Week in Crime: Spotlight on Flatbush and East Flatbush

Crime is up in Flatbush and East Flatbush, and in Brooklyn as a whole.

There has been a 19.5% decrease in crime reported to Flatbush’s 67th Precinct but an 81.8% increase reported to East Flatbush’s 70th Precinct during the week October 18 to October 24 compared to the same period last year.

Across the two precincts, there have been 73 incidents reported, including reports of robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto to both precincts.

During the same period last year, there were 63 incidents reported across the two precincts, including seven incidents of robbery and 27 of felony assault.

There have been 15 murders and 43 rapes reported this year in the neighborhood, compared with 19 murder and 54 rapes reported by the same date in 2020.

The most common incidents reported over the week-long period were felony assault and grand larceny, with 26 reports of felony assault and 25 of grand larceny.

On Oct. 27, the 67th Precinct tweeted a photo of a loaded firearm a public safety team removed from the streets, and on Oct. 26 the 70th Precinct also tweeted a photo of a gun one of its public safety teams had recovered from a 16 year old boy.

Across Brooklyn:

Across the borough, there have been 595 incidents reported between Oct. 18 to Oct. 24, according to NYPD’s CompStat. There were eight reported rapes across Brooklyn, 83 robberies and 121 felony assaults.

A 40-year-old man has been convicted of strangulation and assault as hate crimes for the unprovoked attack against a Jewish man, whom he cursed and strangled as the victim was walking home from a synagogue, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced. James Vincent was convicted on Thursday of the April 2018 crime, following a jury trial before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Donald Leo.

A 36-year-old East New York man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting his brother inside their shared apartment in East New York in April 2018, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Jahmorley Gayle was sentenced today by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent DelGiudice to 15 years in prison and five years’ post release supervision following his guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter in September.

Two Brooklyn men have been indicted for attempted murder as a hate crime and other charges in connection with an alleged anti-gay attack against two men at a Bushwick bodega in September. Both victims were assaulted and stabbed and suffered numerous injuries, including collapsed lungs. The alleged attackers are Christopher Clemente, 37, of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Jonathan Carter, 31, of Ocean Hill, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Friday.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is looking for three suspects who attacked a Jewish man in Crown Heights. Video shows the suspects firing a BB gun out of a car near Montgomery Street and Albany Avenue on Oct. 11, hitting the 23-year-old man in the head. The victim was wearing traditional Jewish garb at the time and was knocked to the ground as the suspects drove off. He used his suit jacket to shield himself from the BBs.
