Undocumented New Yorkers who were badly affected by Hurricane Ida are getting $27 million in relief funds, the governor and mayor have announced.

The money will be given to community organizations in neighborhoods that were badly affected by flooding, which will work directly with residents who do not qualify for FEMA assistance.

Governor Hochul said the funding was the fulfillment of the promise she made to do everything in her power to help impacted communities recover.

"With these resources dedicated to undocumented New Yorkers who are ineligible for FEMA relief and partnerships with organizations on the ground, we can close gaps in aid and help New Yorkers in need,” Hochul said.

“I urge eligible New Yorkers to apply to get the funding they need to rebuild."

The program is being managed by the New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) and will target undocumented individuals in the counties included in the Presidential Major Disaster Declaration approved for Individual Assistance, which includes Kings, Bronx, Nassau, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland.

In Brooklyn, the Chinese American Planning Council at 4101 8th Ave. will be responsible for providing the assistance. It will begin providing assistance and accepting applications on Monday, September 27, 2021. The application period will close on Friday November 26, 2021.

In order to qualify for this program, the applicants must not be eligible for FEMA assistance and not have an individual in their household who is eligible for assistance.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the funds would help ensure all New Yorkers had access to the aid they needed to recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ida.

"Regardless of documentation status, we will get support to the most recent victims of our climate crisis and are here to help every step of the way."

For any immigrant in need of assistance, or to connect with ONA's programs, call the New Americans Hotline at 1-800-566-7636 9:00am to 8:00pm, Monday through Friday. All calls are confidential. Assistance is available in over 200 languages. For more information, visit the website here.
