This Saturday, marching bands, step teams and DJs will turn up the volume at Restoration Plaza in an event promoting historically Black colleges and universities.

The Battle of the Bands, HBCU Edition 2021 is being hosted by Councilmember Robert Cornegy and will see Brownsville Excellence Marching Band, Brooklyn United, Empire Elite marching band and Brooklyn Alliance Drumline come together alongside DJs The Legendary Chris Washington, DJ Jon Quick, DJ P-Drama, DJ Play Dat.

Cornegy said now was the time for "a joyful noise" after 18 months of living through COVID-19, adding the bands would "uplift your soul."

"If you haven't gone to an HBCU, then you have not experienced the energy of being on the Yard. Since Brooklyn is such a huge African-American hub, it's time to bring the Yard here," he said.

"If you want to change the narrative of the African-American community, then these young artists will show you that we have the best and brightest right here in Central Brooklyn."

The event will also feature Divine 9 fraternities and sororities, and resources and information from HBCU college, including Hampton University, Lincoln University, Clark Atlanta University, North Carolina A&T, Grambling University, Shaw University and Spelman College.

Cornegy said the event was about honoring homecoming, while upholding public health measures including practicing social distancing and requiring masks.

The event will be held at Restoration Plaza this Saturday, September 25 from 12:00pm-6:00pm.
