When Marina and Daniel Shachamorov were given the opportunity to hand out free food to New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet through the pandemic, they didn't hesitate.

After ten months on the street at the height of the pandemic and more than 10,000 meals handed out, they didn't expect to be back out so soon due to another natural disaster. But on Monday on Knickerbocker Ave. in Bushwick they were back at it.

For the past week, and until Friday this week, the couple who own food truck Meatos are giving out free meals to anyone affected by Hurricane Ida and who is need of some hot, fresh food — and they're happy to be doing it.

"We're so honored that we can help with that, it's a big honor to be a part of this community," Marina Shachamorov said.

"We did the same thing with COVID, we served maybe 10,000 meals for 10 months — it's a big honor."

The couple started Meatos in 2015 as a family business after immigrating to the city. Marina said it wasn't easy to come alone to New York City with a baby and no family, but "thank God we're fighters."

Although the couple -- who own the Meatos food truck, an Israeli restaurant Harissa Grill and a catering business -- have been in Brooklyn the past two days, the truck travels across the city visiting neighborhoods in need.

Meatos is part of a City run program managed by NYC Emergency Management where around 10 food trucks who are part of the New York Food Truck Association are handing out free food to those affected by the tropical storm.

Meatos will be at 481 Knickerbocker Ave, in Bushwick until 6:00pm Monday, Sept 20. To check out where you can access free meals, visit follow NYC Emergency Management on Instagram here.
