As The Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation gets ready to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its arts outreach program, the arts institution has announced it will be holding the program with students in three Brooklyn schools and one Manhattan school as part of the new school year.

Asase Yaa ("Mother Earth") is a cultural arts institution based in Brooklyn that centers on the African diasporic experience in America. It offers intensive study and technical training in drums and dance forms that include tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, modern, and African to boys and girls ages 3 -18.

For its schools outreach program, Asase Yaa will be holding classes in Djembe drum and drumline classes, along with African, jazz, Hip Hop, Afro beat and contemporary modern dance classes.

It will also offer classes in theater production, choir ensembles, and visual arts. The 45 to 60-minute classes are custom tailored for each school and run throughout the full calendar school year, the organization said.

This year's schools are Van Siclen Community School (George Gershwin Junior High School); MS 250 (West Side Collaborative Middle School); UAMA (Urban Assembly School of Music and Art); and PS 224755 Wortman Ave.

In addition, Asase Yaa said it would resume in-person and virtual learning for its School of the Arts Dance and Drum Program in the fall of 2021.

Rubie Inez Williams, director of operations for the foundation, said the team was thrilled to return to in-person learning after the "incredibly challenging" past year, especially for those families who had had to adapt to virtual learning.

"Our approach to education is designed to be an immersive and holistic learning experience," she said.

"In this coming year, we'll once again be able to offer our students an opportunity to learn all the art forms we offer with their friends and fellow students in a COVID safe and engaging environment."
