The Week in Crime: Spotlight on Flatbush and East Flatbush

Crime is up in Flatbush and East Flatbush, but down in Brooklyn as a whole.

Crime is up in Flatbush and East Flatbush, but down in Brooklyn as a whole.

There has been a 23% increase in crime reported to Flatbush's 70th Precinct and a 29.6% increase reported to East Flatbush's 67th Precinct during the week June 28 to July 4 compared to the same period last year.

Across the two precincts, there have been 67 incidents reported, including one murder reported to the 67th Precinct, and reports of rape, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto to both precincts.

During the same period last year, there were 53 incidents reported across the two precincts, including 15 incidents of felony assault and 12 of grand larceny.

There have been 10 murders and 26 rapes reported this year in the neighborhood, compared with seven murder and 29 rapes reported by the same date in 2020.

Looking at the 28-day cycle, there has been a 20% reduction in incident reports at the 70th Precinct and 17% increase at the 67th Precinct this year on last.

The most common incidents reported over the week-long period were felony assault and grand larceny, with 21 reports of felony assault and 14 of grand larceny.

On July 6, the 67th Precinct tweeted a photo of car wanted in connection with reckless endangerment, and called on the public for help.

On July 8, the 70th Precinct tweeted a photo of man wanted in connection with a burglary and called on the public for help locating him.

Across Brooklyn:

Across the borough, there have been 529 incidents reported between June 28 to July 4, according to NYPD's CompStat, including one murder in Brooklyn South and one murder in Brooklyn North. There were nine reported rapes across Brooklyn, 75 robberies and 138 felony assaults.

In the headlines:

Police in Brooklyn shot and killed a man who opened fire at three people inside a liquor store in Bushwick, said the NYPD. Cops responded to 1195A Halsey Street on Thursday at about 10:30 p.m. where the victims told the officers the direction the gunman had fled. Officers discovered the suspect, with a gun in hand, crouched on the sidewalk in front of 520 Wilson Avenue. They ordered the man to drop his gun but he did not comply, cops said. The officers then opened fire on the man. He was pronounced dead at Wyckoff Hospital.

A mail carrier is recovering after suffering several broken bones in his face when he was assaulted by at least two men on dirt bikes, police said. The men remain at large. One business owner said he saw a group of several men on dirt bikes riding around a Greenpoint, Brooklyn neighborhood aggressively, right before the assault happened.

Moses Ewan, 35, confessed to shelter workers in Kipps Bay that he killed his roommate, Ronald Snoddy, 67, whose body was later found in his East New York apartment with multiple stab wounds. Friends said Snoddy took Ewan into his home three years ago after meeting him at a local grocery store where Ewan worked, and learning about his plight.

A father of three knifed to death outside his Brooklyn apartment building was remembered Tuesday as a neighborhood do-gooder who was about to move to Texas to be closer to family. Anthony Berry, 45, got into an argument with his killer outsides a Flatbush bodega about 1:55 a.m. Sunday. His adversary followed Berry down the block to his home in the Flatbush Gardens apartment complex on Foster Ave. near Nostrand Ave., sparking a fight, cops said.
