The Week in Crime: Spotlight on Bushwick

Overall, crime is up in Bushwick and in Brooklyn as a whole.

There has been a 40.7% increase in crime reported to Bushwick's' 83rd Precinct during the week May 31 to June 6, compared to the same period last year.

There have been 38 incidents reported, including rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto.

During the same period last year, there were 27 incidents reported, including 12 burglaries and seven incidents of grand larceny.

There has been two murders and nine rapes reported this year in the neighborhood, compared with three murders and nine rapes reported by the same date in 2020.

Looking at the 28-day cycle, there has been a 17.9% increase in incident reports this year on last.

The most common incident reported over the week-long period was felony assault, with 10 reports of the crime. That is six more reported incidents than the same period last year.

On June 2, the 83rd Precinct tweeted about arrest that was made following a Memorial Day shooting in Bushwick where five men were shot.

Across Brooklyn:

Across the borough, there have been 508 incidents reported between May 31 and June 6 according to NYPD's CompStat, including one murder in both Brooklyn South and Brooklyn North. There were six reported rapes across Brooklyn, 75 robberies and 119 felony assaults.

A 22-year-old man died after he was accidentally shot by his friend while they were playing with a gun inside the victim's Brooklyn home — and cops are searching for the pal, sources said Sunday. Hakeem Norman died May 31st, two days after he was shot once in the neck inside his home on Pacific St. near Ralph Ave. in Crown Heights, sources said.

.A Brooklyn firehouse is under fire for finding a lost dog and returning it to the wrong owner. After spending a long, sleepless night last month searching for his beloved Mini Australian Shepherd, Dwight St. Louis was delighted to learn that someone had found his family's dog and dropped it off at a nearby firehouse. That was until St. Louis got there and learned that firefighters had given little Rocky away to someone else.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Wednesday that a 12-year-old boy who died after his family said he was punched and bullied actually passed away from natural causes. The autopsy revealed Romy Vilsaint's cause of death to be peptic ulcer disease and a helicobacter pylori infection.

Rising East Flatbush rapper Supa Gates has passed away nearly seven weeks after he was shot in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood. He was 25. The New York Daily News reports that Gates, born Aaron Williams, was shot multiple times on April 11 while in the passenger seat of a Mercedes parked on St. John's Place near Troy Avenue. Williams died last Thursday (May 27) at Kings County Hospital, where he had been recovering since the shooting.
