On Saturday, the intersection of Caton and Flatbush Avenues was renamed 'Dr. Roy A. Hastick, Sr. Way' in honor of the late-Caribbean entrepreneur and leader.
Hastick, who was honored at the renaming ceremony by local politicians, leaders, community members and family, was the founder of the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Councilmember Mathieu Eugene, who sponsored the name change, said Hastick was an outstanding community leader, entrepreneur and mentor to many people in Brooklyn throughout his career.
"He was a true visionary and a dear friend of the community," Eugene said.
"His dedication was undeterred by the health struggles he faced in his later years and reinforced his unique legacy of public service."
Assemblymember Diana Richardson, who was at the ceremony, said Hastick was one of the many giants produced by Brooklyn's Caribbean community "who have contributed mightily to the social fabric of this great city, adding that Hastick dedicated his life to the empowerment of his community "to grow, build and thrive."
"Through his many affiliations and his leadership, Dr. Hastick was and remains a pillar of Central Brooklyn," Richardson said.
"He leaves behind a loving family, a grateful community and a legacy of accomplishments that will endure and serve as an inspiration for the generations to come. We honor his contributions today and rename this street as a lasting tribute to his life of service."
State Senator Zellnor Myrie said Hastick exemplified the "dedication, commitment and entrepreneurialism of Brooklyn's vibrant Caribbean-American community."
"He led a life of service to our small businesses and the community at large. He will be missed, and it's my honor to recognize him today."
