In need of some healing music and art-making, coupled with some delicious snacks and local wares? Well, Brooklyn Museum has got you.
This weekend, the museum is kicking off its annual First Saturdays series — but this time, following the year we've had, its First Saturdays Lite.
This Saturday, May 1, will be a low-key, free outdoor afternoon amplifying culture and community in our borough, and celebrating springtime abundance with healing music and art-making inspired by Lorraine O'Grady: Both/And, a museum spokesperson said.
Also part of the celebration is Gyal Tings Soundsystem (featuring Felukah, Shirine Saad, Boston Chery and Illexxandra), who will take over the plaza steps with sounds from Cairo to Haiti, Kingston, and San Juan.
There will also be local wares and food on sale in the Brooklyn Pop-Up market, which is spotlighting Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage and vendors who focus on wellness.
For over twenty-one years, the museum has hosted the First Saturdays monthly evenings of free programming, welcoming visitors from central Brooklyn and beyond to celebrate the borough's culture and community.
Because of the ongoing pandemic, the museum has had to cancel indoor public programming, but said it remained committed to bringing engaging arts and culture through events such as First Saturday Lite.
First Saturday Lite will be held on the plaza on Eastern Parkway from 2:00—6:00pm on May 1, June 5 and August 7, 2021, for live music and DJ sets, local vendors, and art-making in celebration of our communities. The museum is inviting community members to reach out with performances, films, or activities.
