The Week in Crime: Spotlight on Crown Heights

Overall, crime is down in Crown Heights, and in Brooklyn as a whole.

There has been a 10% reduction in crime reported to Crown Heights' 77th Precinct and 12.5% reduction reported to the neighborhood's 71st Precinct during the week March 1 to March 7 compared to the same period last year.

Across the two precincts, there have been 32 incidents reported, including rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto.

During the same period last year, there were 36 incidents reported, including nine incidents of robbery and 14 of grand larceny.

There has been three murders and six rapes reported this year in the neighborhood, compared with one murder and six rapes reported by the same date in 2020.

Looking at the 28-day cycle, there has been a 12.5% reduction in incident reports at the 77th Precinct and 10.9% reduction at the 71st Precinct this year on last.

The most common incidents reported over the week-long period were robbery, felony assault and grand larceny, with eight reports of each. That is one less robbery, two less burglaries and six less reports of grand larceny than the same period last year.

On March 11, the 77th Precinct tweeted a photo of car that officers said was involved in a non-fatal shooting, calling on the community for information to help locate a shooting suspect.

Also on March 11, the 71st Precinct tweeted a photo of a gun one of the precinct's public safety teams had recovered in Crown Heights.

Across Brooklyn:

Across the borough, there have been 471 incidents reported between March 1 and March 7, according to NYPD's CompStat, including one murder in Brooklyn South and one murder in Brooklyn North. There were five reported rapes across Brooklyn, 58 robberies and 117 felony assaults.

Between March 1 and March, there were 356 violent crimes reported, 704 property crimes and 29 sex crimes. Data collected by NYPD shows violent crimes in the borough typically occur between 4pm and 5am and high time for property crimes is between 10am and 10pm.

In the headlines:

A manhunt is underway for missing murder suspect Christopher Buggs, 26, who was mistakenly released from Rikers Island after a mixup involving another charge this week. Buggs was arrested in connection with the shooting of Ernest Brownlee, 55, at a Brooklyn deli three years ago.

Young Brooklyn mother Stephanie Munoz, 28, was shot and killed outside a party during a shootout in East New York over the weekend. Detectives believe the shootout was due to a gang rivalry, but said it was unclear whether Munoz was the intended target or a bystander.

Two Sanitation workers were beaten by four armed men, who had a knife, baseball bat and golf club, while they were picking up garbage and recycling early Wednesday morning in East New York, police said. The police released the video of the attack and are calling on the public for information.

An argument turned fatal in Bed-Stuy of Thursday night when 44-year-old Shameek Harrison died from a stab wound. Police said the incident happened at about 7:10 p.m. in front of an apartment building at 300 Vernon Ave. The cause of the dispute was unknown and no arrests have been made. The investigation in ongoing.
