Brooklyn, It’s Time to Spring Forward to the Bright Nights of Warmer Seasons

Brooklyn, we're ready for this.

Sunny afternoons are coming to pull us out of that dark, cold winter. Did I mention cold?

This Sunday, Daylight Saving Time will kick in and at 2am clocks will be moved forward an hour.

The move will give us an extra hour of sun at the end of the day paving the way for a light and bright entry into spring on March 20. And you can almost smell the sweet scents of summer wafting through the streets with this weather.

Fun fact: Did you know that Arizona and Hawaii do not observe daylight savings time with the rest of the U.S.? And neither do the U.S. states or territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. In fact, only 40% of countries worldwide use it to make use of daylight hours to conserve energy.

You can thank (or blame!) Benjamin Franklin, who is credited with introducing the practice of falling back and springing ahead as a way to cut down on the use of candles and get people out of bed earlier.

There is a push by a group of bipartisan senators to make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide through the Sunshine Protection Act, proposed by Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts backs the bill, saying in a statement to CNN: "Studies have found year-round Daylight Saving Time would improve public health, public safety, and mental health -- especially important during this cold and dark COVID winter."

But for now, we can make the most of this change—because although we lost an hour, we gain the light!
