On Friday, 2,500 winter coats were distributed at Brooklyn's Atlantic Terminal Mall, to be donated to New Yorkers most in need of acts of warmth during this year's harsh winter.
The coats were handed out by New York Cares as part of its 32nd annual coat drive to local community organizations, who will give them to community members in need.
Due to increased demand because of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York Cares transitioned the annual mass coat distribution event from its warehouse to give to partners directly. This meant community partners were able to distribute the new coats to families and individuals faster than previous years.
Through February, New York Cares raised funds for the coat drive, with a $20 donation affording one new coat. Since 1989, the annual coat drive has distributed more than two million winter coats for men, women and children in need across the city.
New York Cares held the event in partnership with Madison International Realty, which owns Atlantic Terminal Mall.
